The youngest of Austria’s national parks is also the country’s biggest continuous forest area. Ten million trees make the labyrinthine, fissured karst formations of the Reichraming and Sensen mountain ranges an endless green wilderness. But these mountain forests that were originally almost impenetrable lie in the midst of Austria’s iron industry. For more than a thousand years, it supplied the fuel for smelting iron from innumerable little mines in the region, especially from the Styrian Erzberg.

Researchers have only recently found the longest large mammal migration in the continental United States: Mule deer migrate 150 miles (241 kilometers) in western Wyoming each year. And its no easy task for them—barriers include highways, fences, tough terrain, and bodies of water. In this video by Joe Riis, a National Geographic grantee and regular contributor, see the modern-day obstacles mule deer overcome to make the migratory trek that they likely have been making for generations.

«Чёрные земли» — государственный природный биосферный заповедник, образованный 11 июня 1990 года. Заповедник включает две отличные друг от друга территории — на основном участке «Черные Земли» осуществляется охрана и восстановление популяции сайгака, а участок «Озеро Маныч-Гудило» является водно-болотным угодьем международного значения, здесь находятся гнездовья и зимовки многих редких видов водоплавающих и околоводных птиц.
